Food and the City

I was tasked with bringing a delicious dissertation of NYC’s food scene to life through thoughtful illustration. Food and the City by Ina Yalof is an insider’s look at New York City’s dynamic food culture, through the lens of the chefs, line cooks, restaurateurs, waiters, and street vendors who live it everyday. Throughout the book you’ll find 50 of my illustrations that capture the spirit and grit of this iconic community.

A cultural phenomena

Dominque Ansel is a French-American pastry chef who created the iconic merging of a croissant and a donut aka the cronut. This was my take on that sweet-flaky-crispy-yummy mashup of two pastry staples as featured in the chapter on Ansel’s work in Food and the City.

All chapter illustrations were done with sumi ink and a paintbrush. I used a more organic and unlabored approach to create them and relied more heavily on honest gestures than totally accurate depictions, which gave a fun and playful edge to the designs.
